When Is Air Duct Cleaning Not the Right Fit?
When duct cleaning is not the right call, who we are not the best fit for, and what to do instead.

When Air Duct Cleaning Isn’t the Right Call
If you see mold growing in your ductwork, cleaning alone won’t handle it. This is more than just dust. That’s a remediation job, and it’s not part of our standard cleaning visit. We’ll let you know what we see. And we’ll point you to someone who specializes in mold removal.
The same goes for ducts that are torn, disconnected, or leaking air. Cleaning them out won’t fix an airflow problem. Damaged ductwork needs repair. Sealing or repairing the ducts is the actual fix. We do offer those services if that’s what’s going on.
If your Sunnyvale home was built in the last year or two, you probably don’t need this service yet. Newer systems just haven’t had time to build up dust. A home running its HVAC through years of DFW heat and pollen will. We’d rather tell you to wait.
We also can’t take the job if your property sits outside our 60-mile service radius. That covers Sunnyvale and the greater Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. This includes Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, Allen, Irving, and Carrollton. If a follow-up visit comes up, we want to be able to get there. We’ll say so upfront.
One more: if you’re trying to skip permits or work around code on anything tied to your HVAC system, that’s not a job we’ll take. Every visit is done by licensed technicians. We follow code, no exceptions.
- Visible mold in the ductwork needs remediation, not just cleaning.
- Torn, disconnected, or leaking ducts need sealing or repair first.
- Newly built homes with ductwork under a year old usually don’t need this yet.
- Properties outside our 60-mile DFW service radius will require us to refer you.
- Any request to skip permits or code requirements will result in us passing on that job.
Who We’re Not the Best Fit For
Good service starts with being upfront. Sometimes, we’re not the right call. We’d rather tell you that than take a job we can’t fully stand behind.

Geography is the first limit. We work in Sunnyvale and the greater Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. This includes Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, Allen, Irving, Carrollton, and surrounding suburbs. That’s roughly a 60-mile radius. This range lets us show up on time. We keep our equipment maintained. And we come back quickly if a customer has a follow-up question or issue. If your property is well outside that, we’ll tell you directly. That’s better than a technician driving two hours each way. It prevents rushing the work to make it back.
Code compliance is non-negotiable for us. Every job we take on is done to current code. We pull proper permits and inspections when the scope requires them. Sometimes a homeowner or contractor asks us to skip a permit step. Or work around an inspection. Or cut a corner code doesn’t allow. We pass on those jobs. Unpermitted work can cause real problems later. This includes failed home inspections during a sale. It also creates liability issues if something goes wrong. We’d rather lose a job than put a customer at that risk.
The third situation is more technical: when a duct system has major leaks, disconnected sections, or physical damage. A standard cleaning won’t solve that underlying problem. You can clean every inch of dust out of a duct run. But if it’s pulling in unconditioned attic air through a gap, the system will keep underperforming. And the ducts will get dirty again fast. In those cases, we point customers toward sealing or repairing the ducts first. Once the system is airtight, a cleaning gives you lasting results. It’s not a temporary fix on top of a bigger issue.
- Properties outside our roughly 60-mile service radius around Sunnyvale and the DFW Metroplex.
- Requests to skip permits, inspections, or code requirements.
- Duct systems with major leaks, disconnections, or physical damage that need sealing or repair before cleaning will help.
What We’d Tell You to Do Instead
Not every dusty vent or musty smell in a Sunnyvale home needs a standard duct cleaning. Before you book anything, it’s worth figuring out what’s really going on. The wrong service can waste money. It can also leave the real problem untouched.
If you can see mold growth around a register, or inside a duct, cleaning alone won’t fix it. Mold needs moisture to grow. That might be a condensation issue at the coil. Or a crawlspace with poor drainage. Or a leak in the attic ductwork, common in older Sunnyvale ranch homes. That moisture source has to be fixed first. Cleaning the ducts without fixing the moisture means a repeat problem later.
If your ducts have visible gaps, crushed sections, or disconnected joints, that points to a duct integrity issue. Or if you notice rooms that never seem to heat or cool evenly. Sealing or repairing the ducts is the more appropriate service. It often makes sense to handle that before any cleaning. Leaks can pull attic or crawlspace debris right back into the system after a cleaning is done.
Homes built in Sunnyvale before the 1980s sometimes still have original duct insulation or wrap that may contain asbestos. If that’s a possibility, standard duct cleaning equipment isn’t appropriate. This material needs proper assessment and handling first. This isn’t something to guess about. And don’t disturb it on your own.
And sometimes the answer is that there’s no service need yet. If your filters look normal, there’s no visible dust buildup at the registers. No recent renovation dust. No pest or rodent history. And no one in the house is having new respiratory symptoms. A cleaning may not add much value right now. It’s reasonable to wait and monitor. Don’t pay for a service the system doesn’t need.
For anyone still weighing whether a standard cleaning makes sense, current pricing and what’s included is on our pricing page. This can help put the decision in context alongside these other scopes of work.
