The Short Answer: Some Panel Problems Need A Repair, Others Need A Full Replacement
If one breaker keeps tripping, that’s often a repair. A single circuit might be acting up. The panel itself, its amperage, its breaker slots, its condition, is usually fine. But if the panel is old or maxed out on space, patching one issue just delays the next one. That’s when we’re talking replacement.

The Factors That Decide Repair Or Replace
A panel gets repaired when the problem is isolated. Maybe a bad breaker, a loose lug, or a failed main switch. The rest of the panel is sound. A panel gets replaced when the panel is the problem itself. It’s undersized for the home’s load, or a brand known for failing breakers. We also replace it if a bus bar is showing heat damage. Or if there’s no room left for the circuits a modern home needs.

When A Repair Is Usually Enough
A panel repair usually makes sense when the panel itself is sound. Only a part of it is failing. A single bad breaker, a loose connection, or a failed component inside a panel that’s otherwise in good shape is a repair job. It’s not a replacement job. If the panel is the right amperage for your home, there’s no reason to replace the whole box.

We look at a few things during a visit before we recommend replacing a panel. Is the panel rated for enough amperage to run what you have? Is the grounding done correctly? Is there rust, heat damage, or scorching inside the panel? Are the breakers original and matched to the panel brand? Or has someone mixed in parts that don’t belong? A panel that’s structurally fine with one bad breaker gets a new breaker. A panel that’s undersized, corroded, or has a history of overheating is a different conversation.

What’s not automatically part of that price is work that belongs to somebody else. Or work that only shows up once we’re inside the walls. Oncor has to disconnect and reconnect the service for a full replacement, so plan on being without power for most of a working day and move anything out of the freezer you can’t risk. The utility and the inspector set that day, not us. A repair is a different animal. Most breaker, lug and neutral work happens with the main off for a short stretch while the technician is standing at the panel, and you’re back on before the truck leaves. Weigh that gap if anyone at home runs medical equipment.

Will a bigger panel stop my lights dimming and bring the power bill down?
No on the bill. A panel doesn’t change what your appliances draw, and the meter belongs to Oncor. Dimming is a maybe. If the whole house dips every time the AC compressor or the dryer starts and the service is only 100 amps, the $2,100 to $3,300 upgrade to 200 amps usually settles it. If one room flickers on its own, the cause is downstream – a loose neutral, a failed device, a bad splice in a junction box – and a new panel won’t touch it.
