But that setup only makes sense for certain homes and certain needs, and we’d rather flag that now than after a truck has already rolled out.

If what you actually want is power for the whole house, automatically, without hauling out a generator or running cords, a portable hookup won’t get you there. That’s a whole-home standby generator installation with a transfer switch, a different job with different equipment. We install those too, but it’s its own conversation and its own price point.

That shortcut can energize utility lines and put line workers and neighbors at real risk, and it’s exactly the kind of install that fails inspection or voids insurance coverage after a fire or shock incident. We install to code, pull permits when the jurisdiction requires them, and schedule inspections as part of the job. If a request is really about skipping that process, we’ll decline rather than put our license and your safety on the line.

We also generally turn down labor-only requests to install an interlock kit or inlet box a customer already purchased elsewhere, whether from a big-box store or an online retailer. Generator transfer equipment varies quite a bit in build quality, panel compatibility, and UL listing, and we can’t verify the history or condition of a part we didn’t source ourselves. Since our workmanship guarantee is tied to the equipment we stand behind, mixing in customer-supplied hardware creates a gap in accountability if something fails down the line. We’d rather quote the complete job, parts and labor together, so the warranty actually means something.

What We’d Tell You to Do Instead

Not every situation matches a standard portable generator hookup, and it’s worth knowing what to do next depending on where you land.
