When Electrical Troubleshooting Isn’t the Right Call

Quick Summary: We don’t take every electrical troubleshooting call. If you’re outside our 60-mile service area around Sunnyvale, want work done without a permit where one’s required, or just need labor to install a part you bought somewhere else, we’ll tell you that upfront. We will point you toward a better fit.

Electrical troubleshooting means we find the actual source of a dead outlet, a tripping breaker, or an intermittent fault. We give you a written summary of what we found. This is a real diagnostic visit by a licensed technician. It is not a quick fix. If you need someone to install a switch or fixture you already bought, that’s a different job. We can talk about that separately. But if the plan is for us to just show up and do the labor on equipment you sourced yourself, with no diagnosis involved, we generally pass. We stand behind what we install with a workmanship guarantee. That only works when we’ve verified the part ourselves.

Location matters too. Our service area runs from Sunnyvale across the greater Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. This includes Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, Allen, Irving, and Carrollton. That’s about a 60-mile radius. If your address falls outside that circle, we’ll say so. We won’t send a truck out that can’t reasonably get back to you for follow-up work.

We also won’t take a job where the goal is to skip a required permit or cut a corner the code doesn’t allow. Every electrical troubleshooting visit is performed by a licensed technician, to code. Permits and inspections are pulled when the work calls for them. If someone’s looking for off-the-books electrical work, we’re not the right call. We’d rather say that at the start than after a truck roll.

  • You’re outside the Sunnyvale-to-DFW service radius we cover
  • You want the work done without a permit where one’s legally required
  • You need labor-only installation of a part or fixture you already own, with no diagnosis involved
  • You’re looking for a quick swap of a known bad part rather than a root-cause diagnostic visit

If none of that describes your situation, our electrical troubleshooting service is built for exactly the outlet, breaker, and intermittent fault problems homeowners and business owners run into across North Texas.

Who We’re Not the Best Fit For

We’re not the right call for every situation. We’d rather tell you that up front than waste your afternoon.

If your property sits outside our 60-mile service radius around Sunnyvale, we won’t be the crew that can get to you same day. We can’t reliably come back for a follow-up visit. That area includes the greater Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex: Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, Allen, Irving, and Carrollton. Past that radius, we’ll say so. We won’t send a truck we can’t reliably support later.

We’re also not a fit if the goal is to skip a permit or dodge an inspection that’s required. Every troubleshooting call we run gets handled by licensed technicians, done to code. Permits and inspections are pulled when the work calls for them. If someone’s looking for a shortcut, we’ll pass on the job. We won’t sign our name to it.

One more case worth naming: we don’t do labor-only hookups of electrical parts or panels a homeowner bought somewhere else. Our workmanship warranty only covers equipment we sourced and verified ourselves. Installing something we can’t stand behind isn’t a service we offer, even if the part looks fine in the box. (It might not be up to code for North Texas, by the way.)

  • Homes or businesses more than 60 miles from Sunnyvale, Texas
  • Anyone asking us to skip a permit or inspection the code requires
  • Labor-only installs of panels, wiring, or fixtures bought elsewhere
  • A single flickering light or one tripped breaker that resets clean and stays off, which is often something you can watch on your own before calling anyone

That last one is a genuine judgment call. A breaker that trips once during a storm and holds fine afterward usually isn’t worth a service call. A breaker that keeps tripping, or an outlet that’s warm to the touch, is a different story. That’s worth having looked at.

For anyone who does fall inside our service area and wants the full picture before booking, our electrical troubleshooting service page walks through what a diagnostic visit covers.

Problems That Aren’t an Electrical Troubleshooting Fix

Electrical troubleshooting is for finding the source of a problem. This means a dead outlet, a breaker that keeps tripping, a light that flickers for no clear reason. It’s not the right call for jobs where the fix is already known. The work is the point, not the diagnosis.

Technician's hands testing electrical panel with multimeter during troubleshooting visit

If you already know your panel is undersized, you want an EV charger added, or you’re planning a remodel with new circuits, that’s not troubleshooting. Panel repair and upgrades, subpanel installation, dedicated circuit installation, and EV charger installation are separate jobs with their own scope. We’ll set them up as that from the start. We won’t bill a diagnostic visit you don’t need.

Some jobs also fall outside what any electrician should touch without a permit. We won’t take them that way. If the goal is to skip an inspection or wire around code, we’ll pass on it. Sunnyvale sits across the Dallas and Kaufman county line. Which office handles the permit depends on which side a property falls on. We handle that step. We don’t skip it.

We also don’t do labor-only work on equipment or wiring materials someone else supplied. Our workmanship guarantee only covers what we can verify from the start. That means the wire gauge, the breaker rating, the connections. If you’ve already bought parts and just want someone to install them, that’s not a job we can stand behind. We’ll tell you that before we schedule anything.

Distance matters too. Our coverage area runs from Sunnyvale through the greater Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. This includes Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, Allen, Irving, and Carrollton. That’s about a 60-mile radius. Past that, we won’t send a truck for a diagnostic visit we can’t realistically follow up on if something needs a second trip.

And if what you’re describing sounds like standing water near a panel, exposed wiring after storm damage, or a burning smell, that’s not a scheduled troubleshooting visit either. We treat that as an emergency call, not a booked appointment.

  • Known upgrades like panel replacement, subpanel installs, or EV charger installation, not a diagnostic visit
  • Unpermitted or code-skipping work of any kind
  • Installing customer-supplied electrical equipment with no verification of the parts
  • Properties more than about 60 miles outside Sunnyvale and the DFW Metroplex
  • Active hazards like exposed wiring, burning smells, or water near electrical equipment, which need an emergency response, not a scheduled visit

If your situation fits one of these, you’ll get a straighter answer talking it through on the phone than trying to guess from a website. Our electrical services page covers the full list of what we install and repair once a diagnosis points to next steps.

What to Do Instead

If you’re outside our 60-mile radius around Sunnyvale, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation keeps a public list of licensed electrical contractors. Any electrician you hire for troubleshooting work should carry an active TDLR license. That’s true whether you call us or someone else.

If the goal is to skip a permit or work around a code requirement, your town’s building department is the place to start, not a contractor. In Sunnyvale, that’s the permitting office at townofsunnyvale.org. The inspection authority can differ, depending on which side of the Dallas County and Kaufman County line your property sits on. So it’s worth confirming before any work starts.

If you’ve already bought a panel, outlet, or fixture somewhere else and just want a labor-only install, look for a contractor who’s willing to install equipment they didn’t source. We install what we can verify and stand behind. That’s part of how our workmanship guarantee holds up over time. A different shop may have a policy that fits your plan better.

If your issue traces back to the meter, the service drop, or anything before your panel, that’s Oncor Electric Delivery territory, not ours. Our electrical troubleshooting visit will point that out if we find it. It’s outside what a licensed electrician can correct on the customer side of the line.

And if the fault turns out to be small, a single tripped breaker that resets clean and doesn’t trip again, that’s often something you can handle yourself before calling anyone. Repeated trips, warm outlets, or a breaker that won’t reset are the kind of pattern worth a licensed technician’s eyes.

None of this means we won’t talk it through with you. If you’re not sure which category your situation falls into, that’s a five-minute phone call. No guessing game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about electrical troubleshooting

Half the house lost power and the other half is fine. Is that mine or Oncor’s?

Could be either, and it’s worth two minutes to check before you book. A lost leg at the meter or on the service drop is Oncor’s equipment to fix, not yours – call them first if your neighbors are dark too, or if the lights that still work are dim or unusually bright. If your neighbors are fine and the outage stops at your panel, it’s on your side of the meter, and that’s ours. Half the receptacles dead with the main still on usually points inside the house.

My smart switches keep dropping off the app. Is that something you troubleshoot?

Only the wiring half of it. We can confirm the box has a neutral, that the switch is getting steady line voltage, and that neutrals and grounds aren’t shared where they shouldn’t be – those are real causes of a switch that keeps resetting itself. We don’t do firmware, hub pairing or Wi-Fi coverage. Test it yourself first by putting a plain toggle switch in the same box. If the plain switch works fine, the wiring isn’t your problem and the next call is the manufacturer’s support line, not an electrician.

Something’s wrong at 11pm. Can you get a technician out tonight?

No. Technicians run same-day service six days a week, so the realistic answer is a slot in the day’s schedule – calling at 11pm means the next working day. The answering service picks up 24/7 at 972-288-2263, so leave the details while they’re fresh: which breaker, which rooms, what changed just before it happened. Overnight, switch off the breaker feeding the problem and leave it off, and run an extension cord from a circuit that still works if you need the fridge going. If you’re weighing whether it can wait until morning, heat, smoke or a burning smell means it can’t – that’s the fire department.

You come up under Sunnyvale. Which Sunnyvale is that?

Sunnyvale, Texas – the town in Dallas County just east of Mesquite. Not the California one. We’ve worked out of here since 2009. The day’s routes cover Mesquite, Garland, Rowlett, Balch Springs, Seagoville, Forney, Rockwall and east Dallas, plus the rest of Dallas County and Kaufman County. If you’re outside that, give your address first when you call 972-288-2263 instead of describing the problem – we’ll tell you right then whether it’s a run we make, which beats holding a slot and then cancelling on you.

We’re buying a house and want the electrical checked before closing. Is that a troubleshooting call?

No. Troubleshooting chases a symptom you can point at – a dead outlet, a breaker that trips, lights that flicker on one circuit. A general look at everything is a home inspection, and a licensed home inspector is who you want for that, inside your option period. Where we fit is after: bring the inspector’s report, point at the line that worries you – double-tapped breakers, no ground at the receptacles, a subpanel with neutrals and grounds tied together – and we’ll test that item and tell you what correcting it takes.
